Large Rabbit Hutches or a Rabbit Cage – Which One?

Rabbits run and hop. They do that everyday and every time they will have the opportunity to do so. If you are going to have pet rabbit, which one will you have: a cage or one of the large rabbit hutches you might have seen in the rabbit shop?

 

A cage or a hutch?

 

A question that comes to mind especially of a new pet owner is whether he or she will have a cage a rabbit hutches?

 

Well, depending on your considerations you might decide either or both. The reason is that a rabbit needs sunlight and of course fresh air and exercise. If you believe they can be provided in your house without the need for you to bring the rabbit out, then you can just opt for the rabbit cage.

 

Some rabbit owners shared their experience that the rabbits when under their supervision are good and well behaved fellows but when they are absent, they start chewing everything they could inside the house. This is not only destructive but also dangerous for your pet and your house.

 

Because of that, they opted to have a cage and one of those large rabbit hutches they saw in one of the stores. This may be a little expensive decision, but if you love your pet and would like to have it happy and comfortable and safe, it could be the best decision you have ever made in connection with your pet rabbit.

 

When there are people in the house, they let the rabbit in the cage and free to go out and get in so it can play outside or socialize with the occupants of the house. The moment occupants of the house leave for work or school so that nobody is left behind to supervise the rabbit, it is then placed in the rabbit hutch.

 

Large rabbit hutches provide ample space for rabbits to have the fun and exercise they need. To be able to have ample space for exercise, the rule of thumb is the rabbit should be able to make at least 6 hops. This then will depend on how big your rabbit is or will be, in the case of a small bunnies.

 

They are also amply protected from potential four footed predators and even birds of prey like eagles, hawks or owls. Provided the rabbit hutch is made of good quality materials like thick and durable plywood and strong wire mesh, it will last long. Most of all, its elevated position will provide that natural protection from predators that is need.

 

They are even protected from the elements except during rainy season and cold or freezing weather, during which time they have to be removed from their rabbit hutches and placed in the cage inside the house.

 

Since there will always be times that even during cold or freezing weather it cannot be avoided at times that there is nobody left in the house, the hutch should have thick bed of straw that will provide the rabbit sufficient warmth when it goes to lie down and to sleep.

 

In many instances of bad weather, for as long as the hutch is in a place protected from strong winds and rain, there should be no problem. It should also be sheltered from direct sunlight just in case the sun is hot, because they are used to cope with cooler temperature and not hot weather.

 

Still, a cage or a hutch

 

If the situation demands that for the sake of pet there should be one of those large rabbit hutches to complement the rabbit cage inside, then there should be both of them. However, if the situation is right that there could only be the rabbit hutch for your pet rabbit.
