Chinchilla Rabbit Rat
What small animal would be best out of Chinchilla, Rat, Hamster, Ferret, Rabbit, Guinea pig, or Hedgehog?
Im just asking as in your experience Im not thinking about getting an animal yet I still have to study.
That really depends on a lot of things:
How much money you have to spend, both initially and as an ongoing cost
How much time you have for cleaning, feeding, training, socialisation and care
How much work you want the animal to be
How much room you have for a cage
How long you want th animal to live
Whether you are willing to provide the social animals with a friend (chinchillas, rats, ferrets and guinea pigs are ALL social and should not be kept alone).
For example, in my opinion the best pet out of this list would be ferrets, because I work part time and have plenty of time to spend with them. They are tremendous fun and very cute, but they also smell, usually bite very hard until trained not to, are stubborn and difficult to litter train, require 4-6 hours of attention a day and need a lot of money, training and care. So if you don’t have a lot of money, time, patience, etc then they would not be a good pet for you.
However, overall I would say the best quality pet that is also reasonably cheap and easy to feed and care for are rats. You MUST get at least two rats they are social and suffer badly when kept alone. The cage usually costs a lot but other than that caring for them is cheap, and they are very social, friendly and funny. They behave like tiny dogs and will climb up the cage to greet you whenever you go near it. They can learn tricks, come running to their names, are super intelligent and overall wonderful pets. The major downside of rats is that they barely live past the age of 3, and 2-2.5 years of age is a likely time for rats to die.
